Warning To All Print Publishers -- E-Book Conversion Service Is No Worries!
Print publishers pack the halls of electronic book conversion seminars anxious to learn the joys of this new art. Truth is, eBook conversion is a simple choice. What is not is how to actually make money from eBooks.
I've seen this phenomenon before, most notably with musicians and authors. The former publishes their music on iTunes. "Hey, its real now," they assert with a sense of achievement. Then nothing occurs.
Self-published writers do the same, publishing their books to Amazon. Its real, its for sale, however, nothing happens. How come? Because making something prepared for sale doesn't equate to real sales. It is what I call the... "If you build it they'll come delusion. Sorry, people. The "Field of Dreams," although a beautiful, feel good movie, has no foundation in reality.
You now have the ability to see why the print publishing industry's current fascination with eBook conversion is a seen it before moment for me. Whats odd is that they know better. They understand that book sales are a simple result of sound promotions. Yet the mystique of the new paradigm of electronic book publishing leads many to (reach|come to|make} exaggerated inferences, that the e-book world is somehow a different beast.
Once this conversion mystique is seen for what it is, a relative no brainer, the veil of illusion is lifted, disclosing that eBooks need the same promotional ability as do conventional books.
The final analysis. Nothing happens if there is no promotion. So do not sweat the tiny minutia like e-book conversion. It only cloaks the real issue, that print publishers, largely stuck in the 20th century, {lack the promotional abilities crucial to moving product in the new millennium. Namely, web based marketing abilities.
Standard print publications have been conspicuously absent in the face of 2 latest and certain circumstances.
Self-published eBook writers like John Locke and Amanda Hocking, both who have sold over 1 million copies of their E-Books on Amazon, have proven to the misfortune of conventional publishers that they just do not need a book publication deal. And who could argue with that? The profit speaks for itself.
The price of electronic books, anywhere from free to approximately 3 bucks, has absolutely upset traditional pricing schemes, leaving no elbowroom for traditional print publications who are encumbered with expenses and overhead for which smart go it alone aren't.
But the situation for book publishers isnt as atrocious as it appears. After understanding that the pricing of the ebook market has been disrupted by self-publishers, a sweet spot is exposed at a higher tier, namely Multi media eBook publishing.
Here's why...
MultiMedia eBooks enjoy higher pricing parameters, permitting book publishers a viable entry point to re-confirm their credibility and value.
Only a few self-published authors possess the resources, monetary or alternatively, to produce top of the range Multi media eBooks.
Sounds great, but how?
I believe some book publishers will opt to go it alone by boning up on the abilities and resources crucial to making MultiMedia eBooks. To those that do, best of luck.
But an a lot less costly and risky offer is usually to form alliances with firms that already possess the necessary experience. Likely suspects are music publishers, video archivists, and firms that specialize in Multi Media eBooks production and promotional services.
For first to market points to consider, book publishers would be best served by employing their existing back catalogue rather than creating net new Multi media eBooks from scratch. Not only does this strategy afford speed to market, and it can be adapted to leveraging existing Multi-media assets, effectively breathing new life into them without incurring additional costs of making new ones.
Then again, I imagine book publishers can continue to sit on the sidelines with the hope that one day the eBook market will stabilize at a far higher price tag. But I wouldnt bet on it. Whats more, an industry that takes a wait and see approach is by definition, not in the market. Such is the case of the book publishing industry today. It just cant last. The clock is running.
